This volume contains a collection of revised lectures delivered at the 53rd Annual Meeting of the Permanent International Altaistic Conference (PIAC) in St. Petersburg in July 2010, which attracted more than 100 scholars from around the world. The Institute of Oriental Manuscripts and the Hermitage, the co-hosts of the gathering, hold professional literature and artefacts of inestimable value - much of which is still relatively unknown to Orientalists - and this explains the large turnout. The presentations, some of which treated their subjects philologically or analyzed them linguistically, dealt with unknown sources relevant to the study of the history, art, literature and language of the Altaic world. Other contributions covered the historical significance of the scientific archives of previous generations of Altaists and the source materials they collected.
